A PUPPY’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Published in the Englewood Sun on December 25, 2016

‘Twas the night before Christmas
and all through the house
A puppy is squeaking
an old rubber mouse.

The wreath which was merrily
hung on the door
Is scattered in pieces
all over the floor.

The stockings that hung
in a neat little row
Now boast a large hole
in each one of the toes.

The tree was subjected
to bright colored whims,
Although still splendid
It’s missing some limbs.

I catch him and kiss him
“be good”, I insist.
With a wag of his tail he scampers off
To see what he’s missed.

And now as I watch him
The thought comes to me,
This puppy’s the spirit
That Christmas should be.

Should children and puppies
yet show us the way,
And teach us the joy
That come with this day?

For they bring the message
that’s written above
That reminds us most of all
CHRISTMAS IS LOVE
From those that can-not speak for themselves, Merry Christmas to all!
