It is always a joyful experience when senior pets are given a second chance at life. Even more so when they are adopted by senior people. The love, affection and new found companionship has to be a win-win situation.

Rosie, an eleven year old, very small female Yorkie/Silky Terrier type and Shadow, a seven and a half year old Yorkie, came to Suncoast Humane Society following recent traumatic histories. Rosie’s previous family had experienced a life crisis and were forced to make desperate decisions, including surrendering Rosie to the humane society.

It is no wonder that Rosie was a little shy, at first, with animal care staff. However, with a little work, her true temperament came shining through. She is a sweetheart, friendly with both people and with other pets.

Shadow’s recent history was also sad. In fact, it could have ended tragically for the little dog. He had been left behind, allegedly abandoned by his previous owners. Luckily, the landlord found shadow and brought him to Suncoast Humane Society for safety and care. Staff describes Shadow as a love bug, however, there were some medical issues to deal with. He had pretty bad skin ailments along with very uncomfortable eye problems. The medical team immediately started treatments and Shadow is on the mend.
Some important things in life can be a matter of timing. Charles and Herman are brothers from North Carolina and Maryland, respectively. As snowbirds, they and their families spend winters in Ft. Myers. Both had been looking to adopt Yorkie style dogs for quite a while. In fact, they had previously visited Suncoast Humane Society a week or so before either Rosie or Shadow had arrived. Fortunately, after visiting other shelters, the brothers decided to return to Suncoast Humane Society in hopes of finding the little dogs they both had been looking to adopt.

There was no doubt about it. It was a good decision and well worth the wait. These two little dogs, senior in age, were going to be adopted. Charles had bonded with Shadow and Herman with Rosie. What a way to begin a new year and a new life.
